Europe Day 2025

Reflecting on Europe’s Future Through Dialogue and Shared Perspectives

08.05.2025

On the occasion of Europe Day on 9 May, participants in the European Democrats Institute’s “Capsule” workshop came together for a thought-provoking exchange on Europe’s response to some of today’s most pressing challenges, including democracy, defence, climate change, and energy security.

Working collaboratively in groups, participants explored these key themes through the lens of their own experiences and visions for Europe, France, and democratic governance. The discussions encouraged critical reflection on both current realities and future aspirations, placing perspectives, challenges, and solutions at the heart of the collective exercise.

Throughout the workshop, a number of common values emerged across the different groups. Humanism, solidarity, and the sincerity of proposed solutions stood out as recurring principles guiding participants’ reflections. Beyond identifying challenges, participants sought to redefine the issues according to their own understanding of what Europe should represent in the years ahead.

The speakers and experts present during the event built upon the ideas and proposals formulated during the group discussions. Their interventions helped place these contributions in a broader context, offering analysis at local, national, European, and global levels. This exchange between participants and speakers enriched the debate and highlighted the relevance of citizen engagement in shaping Europe’s future.

Another key takeaway from the discussions was the importance of the principle of subsidiarity. Participants repeatedly emphasised the value of local action, proximity to citizens, and the role of shared experiences in addressing common challenges. The local scale was seen not as an alternative to European action, but as an essential complement to it, ensuring that policies remain connected to the realities of everyday life.

By fostering dialogue, reflection, and collective thinking, the workshop demonstrated the continued importance of citizen participation in the European project. On a day dedicated to celebrating European unity, the event offered a valuable opportunity to explore how democratic values, solidarity, and practical solutions can help Europe meet the challenges of the future.
