International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women

Public Event on Femicide and Gender-Based Violence in Athens

President of IED Enrico Borghi and Italian Senator Daniela Sbrollini represented Italy on the public event organized by the Initiative for European Progress,  in collaboration with the Institute of European Democrats (IED) and the Greek organization “Gine Anthropos” (“Be Human”), founded by the families of femicide victims.

The event, which took place in Athens on 24 November, at Theatro Peiraios 131, one of the most emblematic cultural venues in the city,

aimed to raise public awareness and promote the official recognition of the term “femicide” at the European level, while highlighting the need for coordinated institutional measures to prevent and combat gender-based violence.

The event had three thematic sessions:

Political and Institutional Framework

This opening panel focused on European and national legal perspectives, relevant data, and institutional proposals for tackling gender-based violence.

Digital Violence and New Forms of Abuse

This panel explored cyber violence, online harassment, and revenge porn, along with policy proposals for a unified European framework.

Testimonies of Victims and Families

This session gave voice to survivors and families of some Greek femicide victims.

The event was moderated by journalists Anthi Voulgari and Emy Livaniou, and brought together artists, academics, journalists, and civil society representatives who have been active voices against gender-based violence.
