IED Seminar in Prizren, Kosovo, September 21, 2024
21.09.2024
We gathered in Prizren, Kosovo, a city symbolic of the Western Balkans’ rich cultural diversity, to reflect on the region’s relationship with the European Union, focused on the next steps following the European elections and how they will impact the future of the Western Balkans in the EU. In this critical juncture, the participants highlighted the following key points:
Heightened Attention from European Institutions - New Momentum for Enlargement Participants recognized the opportunity presented by the post-election period to reignite the EU enlargement process. The debate underscored that while there are challenges, there is also a genuine chance for tangible progress and calls on EU and its institutions to place the Western Balkans high on their agenda, recognizing that the future stability and success of Europe are closely tied to the integration of the Western Balkans. The region must be seen as an essential component of Europe's collective future. Supporting the Efforts of Western Balkan Countries Given the fragile geopolitical environment, especially with external influences vying for power in the region, the EU must approach the Western Balkans with a deeper understanding of the local dynamics.
The countries of the Western Balkans have made significant efforts to align with European standards.
The seminar underscored the need for the EU to not only acknowledge these reforms but to actively assist these countries in overcoming the remaining obstacles. Concrete steps should be taken to address challenges in governance, the rule of law, and economic development, so that these nations are fully prepared for EU membership. Concrete and Significant Steps During This Mandate The seminar participants called for immediate and substantial action during the current mandate of the European institutions. This period provides a vital opportunity to make real progress on the enlargement agenda. The EU must take tangible steps that bring the Western Balkans closer to membership. This includes advancing accession talks, providing more robust financial and technical support, and ensuring that the enlargement process becomes a priority for European leadership.
In conclusion, this seminar in Prizren reaffirmed that the future of the Western Balkans is intertwined with the European Union. The time for the EU to act is now. Through focused attention, a clear understanding of the geopolitical stakes, and substantial support for the region, the EU can secure the Western Balkans' path towards integration, stability, and prosperity.
